don’t buy a new 3 series!

July 19th, 2006

Well at least not until you’ve read this…

According to my sources, BMW is discontinuing the 325i and 330i sedans and replacing them with 328i and 335i models.

It was rumoured that the coupe would get these engines exclusively but now it seems that’s not the case.

The 328i gets a 330hp version of the 3.0L engine (the intake manifold is still a single stage unit) while the 335i gets the twin turbo that’s the subject of more than one of my previous posts.

(Oddly the 265hp, variable intake manifold 3.0 will continue on in the X3, 5 series, and new X5 - I say oddly because the engine’s giddy appetite for redline bursts seems more fitting for the 3 series than any other car in the lineup. The twin turbo’s going to be faster, but I worry it will trade the normally aspirated engine’s rev happiness for a more linear, locomotive-like shove. Sample the 3.0L while you can: its an engine that feels more M than many M engines in BMW’s past…)
