GTO? An Accord MAYBE, but no GTO.

To my eyes the bloated hips, the long overhang and squity eyes and sliping nose recall GTO at first glance, which brings up a point I’ve been meaning to make re: what about the styling of a modern BMW leaves me cold… the bumpers.
Classic BMWs (e.g. last 3 and 5 series) had bumpers that ended at the car’s waistline, while newer ones have bumper caps that reach up to integrate the kidney grille area.
To me these plastic caps scream cheap – look at the early 90s Camry vs. the late 90s one – Toyota switched to the plastic bumper cap for the same reason they replaced stainless steel fasteners with plastic ones: to save money.
Not only does the bumper on a new 5 evoke that Camry or a Grand Prix in shape, but the association is one of downmarket construction even if they’re functional equivalents.
I find it ironic that while other companies pour money into more finely detailed and constructed front ends and interiors, BMW, has chosen to go in the opposite direction…
